Within Reach Sustainable Communities

Bikepacking Journey Presentations and workshops

Don’t Forget – Meet the Sustainable Cyclists Wednesday, Mar 24, 2010!

During 2008-2009. Ryan and Mandy bicycled thousands of miles to visit 100 sustainable communities of all types. They met 20,000+ people and interviewed over 800 of them about their personal journeys toward sustainability. Throughout the course of these visits, Ryan and Mandy lived and worked in these sustainable communities and began to realize that “community is the secret ingredient to sustainability.” Not only is it more economical to creat sustainable systems in community, but it’s more fun too!

Watch this video to learn more about their journey.

Monday December 21
gathering begins at 6:30 am in the garden
(622 N Thornton Ave, Orlando)
Sunrise at 7:14 am + Solstice at 12:47 pm + Sunset at 5:34 pm

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. ~Anne Bradstreet

We invite you to join us to celebrate Winter Solstice with us in the garden under the Bodhi Tree.

Winter Solstice occurs when the sun is at its southernmost point, thus it is the shortest day of the year. On this darkest day of the year, we gather together to celebrate the light beginning its return.

Sunrise Ceremony
with meditation, music, breathwork, and prayer

Garden Play and Seed Planting
Help prepare the garden for the coming season and plant seeds for the garden, to take home and to share with our community

Bring an instrument to share in music making

Massage/reiki/healing exchange

Sunset Ceremony with fire pit, music and releasing exercises

Join us at Sunrise or throughout the day for a time of reflection, celebration, and community.

MORE INFO

The word “permaculture” was coined and popularized in the mid 70′s by David Holmgren, a young Australian ecologist, and his associate / professor, Bill Mollison. It is a contraction of “permanent agriculture” or “permanent culture.” Permaculture is about designing ecological human habitats and food production systems. It is a land use and community building movement which strives for the harmonious integration of human dwellings, microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, and water into stable, productive communities. The focus is not on these elements themselves, but rather on the relationships created among them by the way we place them in the landscape. This synergy is further enhanced by mimicking patterns found in nature.

A central theme in permaculture is the design of ecological landscapes that produce food. Emphasis is placed on multi-use plants, cultural practices such as sheet mulching and trellising, and the integration of animals to recycle nutrients and graze weeds. However, permaculture entails much more than just food production. Energy-efficient buildings, waste water treatment, recycling, and land stewardship in general are other important components of permaculture.

More recently, permaculture has expanded its purview to include economic and social structures that support the evolution and development of more permanent communities, such as co-housing projects and eco-villages. As such, permaculture design concepts are applicable to urban as well as rural settings, and are appropriate for single households as well as whole farms and villages. “Integrated farming” and “ecological engineering” are terms sometimes used to describe permaculture, with “cultivated ecology” perhaps coming the closest.

Florida School of Holistic Living is holding a rummage sale as a fundraiser. The flier went across my desk a little while ago and then I got distracted amassing things to donate both from myself personally, and then from The Alliance Continuuing Bazaar thrift shop over at First Unitarian.

My foyer looks nuts, and my car looks even wackier as I prepare to go make my second drop.

At any rate for those looking to help out with donated goods, donate some volunteer time, or looking for some fun thrifty shopping over the weekend, I invite you to check out the letter and the sale!

Hi Friends,

We are doing a Community Rummage Sale on July 19th to raise money for the co-op and the community garden…plus to help us all free up some physical space and pass along items we are no longer using.

I’m writing to you for two reasons:

1: We need the help of the community to gather items for the rummage sale to supplement what the school will already have. Clean out those closets and garages and bring your items to the school anytime from Wednesday July 16 to Friday July 18.

If you need to schedule a time to bring them outside of these days, let us know.

If it is a large item and you don’t have a way to deliver it to the school, let us know.

All donations will receive a receipt, as all donations are tax-deductible for their net value.
* P.S. – tell your friends, too! We’ve all got a few things lying around that we don’t need anymore!!

2: We need volunteers throughout Friday and Saturday to help us price, set up, and operate the rummage sale. It will be very low key, but extra hands on deck are very welcome! Friday we’ll be pricing and sorting 11 am to 7 pm. Saturday’s sale will set up around 9:30 am and will last until 4 pm (or until we’re sold out). Rain or shine – we will use the classroom if it is rainy that day.

If you can spare some of the junk taking up space in your home or office, turn it into treasure for the co-op and the community garden.
And, let us know if you can help us on July 18th or 19th!

Thanks and blessings,
Emily
