I’ve made these before — it’s cool!

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring… Make a Rain Barrel Catchment System

Environmental Engineer Terry Meer will demonstrate how to make a rain barrel catchment system for your home or garden.

Collection of water from rooftop runoff can provide an ample supply of free ‘soft water’ containing no chlorine, lime or calcium. Rainwater is ideal for many uses, it will also lower your monthly water bill and lessen your impact on the land.

Last week, we were looking for a restaurant in Winter Park that offered healthy meals for our “on the go” but health conscious family.  I did a quick Google search and was happy to find a link for the Green Day Cafe.  It turns out that this eco-friendly restaurant was right across the street from my husband’s shop, and it even had a drive-thru!  I checked out the menu online and placed an order for a number of wraps that were accompanied by “broccoli crunch” and natural potato chips.

I ordered the “Holy Guacamole” wrap while my hubby ordered the “Buffalo Chicken” wrap.  The kids had grilled cheese, but they were really more like quesadillas.  The potato chips, pita chips, and broccoli crunch (slaw) were tasty and went well with the wraps.  We also ordered a side of beans/rice that were made with nutritious brown rice instead of white.  My children’s kids’ meals were served with mandarin oranges and organic apple juice, so this natural-minded mama was very happy!

While the customer service on the phone could have been better, the food was both healthy and delicious.  We’ll definitely be visiting the Green Day Cafe again in the future.

Got a fav recipe you want to see published? Here’s your chance from Slow Food Orlando and Katy from Dine Magazine!

Katy from Dine Magazine and Slow Food Glades to Coast recently connected with Halle Tecco who writes for HuffPo and Stanford Social Innovation Review. She is working on a new book titled, The Flexitarian Cookbook. This book will benefit two organizations — Slow Food USA’s Time for Lunch Campaign, and Yoga Bear and she is looking for a few more chefs to contribute recipes to be included in the book.

The Flexitarian Cookbook is a book of unique recipes that will please both vegetarians and carnivores, and it is set to be published in Fall 2010.

The recipes should have the following focus:

  • Unexpected and unique, combining multiple flavors to maximize palatableness.
  • From around the world, but with a California flair.
  • Accessible and straight-forward, suitable for beginners.

These should be recipes in which meat can be substituted or taken out all together. They are also accepting hearty, healthy vegetarian recipes. Chefs will get full credit for the recipe in both the book and website.

Visit their website at here.

In you or your client is interested in submitting something, email me trisha.strawn@deepcreekranch.us or Katy katy@dinemag.net, as these must be received by May 17, 2010.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing all these films and they’re good.  Go catch them if you haven’t and even if you have!

10 a.m.-5 p.m.

OCALA CIVIC THEATRE

The Organic Food & Film Festival will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010. Everyone is invited to enjoy a relaxed Saturday learning about organic food, expanding their health-care choices, and watching one, two or three life-changing and inspiring films.

Academy Award-nominated “Food Inc.” will be shown at 11:00 a.m. “Food Inc.” is an eye-opening documentary that exposes the underbelly of large-scale industrial farming, the source of 97% of our food.

Rated PG.

“The Future of Food,” at 1:00 p.m., is an excellent expose of genetically modified food. “The Future of Food” takes viewers inside the web of market and political forces that are causing our supermarkets to be stocked with Frankenfoods. The film also exposes how huge multinational corporations are seeking to control the world’s food system.

Rated G.

At 3:00 PM, “What’s Organic About Organic?” will take viewers on a heartening visual field-trip to organic, chemical-free farms. This uplifting, 60-minute film will be introduced by its co-producer, Marty Mesh, who is the director of Florida Organic Growers. FOG will be
present at the Festival all day to educate attendees about organic food, farming and certification.

A new support group is forming for tween girls!

The Maiden Group

The Maiden Group focuses on encouraging girls to have a connection with the magical elemental world, increasing self confidence and positive body awareness. After counseling 10 years in an all girls program I have seen many young girls loose their way during the middle school years. Between ages 10 and 13 most girls are developing their identities. It is very important they have numerous positive women in their lives they can internalize.

Through earth-based and mindfulness techniques such as herbal wisdom, meditations and sacred ceremony, I believe our tween girls will be able to obtain the support they need to navigate their way through this time in their lives.

Please join Chonteau McElvin, Folk Healer for this unique monthly support group.  Facebook RSVP.

Cost is $10.00
