Round Chair

Round Chair

What child wouldn’t love to hear that phrase! With cardboardesign, they can! I stumbled across Cardboardesign  (yes, that is how it is spelled) and was immediately drawn into their website. They make furniture completely out of recycled cardboard! They also make kid-friendly products such as dollhouses, playhouses, chairs, etc., that are made from recycled cardboard and chemical-free, cornstarched-based glue. There are no leftovers from production of their furniture, housewares, or toys — any leftover materials are recycled into paper. If you are wondering how sturdy these products are, the chairs alone can hold up to 600 pounds! All products are shipped in plastic-free packing and stuffed with organic corn-based peanuts.

Although the products are made from recycled cardboard, they can be kind of pricey. But, looking through their website, you may just get inspired to try your hand at making something creative with leftover boxes in your home!

I wanted to take a moment to draw attention to a wonderful site for parents who are interested in natural family living.  We’ve featured the RSS feeds of Nature Moms Blog for quite some time now on this site because the content is really fantastic.   She does a great job of reviewing natural products, but that’s not all you’ll find on her site. My only complaint is that I find the font color a bit hard to read.  I’ve been meaning to email her about that.  Here are a few of the natural parenting sites Tiffany, author of Nature Moms, recommends:

Green Baby Guide

Natural Moms Talk Radio

Instead of TV

Most of you probably don’t know that right here in Central Florida a major water bottling company is wanting to tap into one of our aquifers. Why is this a problem? The water table is already low and they are approving California based Niagara Water Bottling Company to take 177 million gallons of water. Also, the production of plastic at this site will produce waste that will take hundreds of years to decompose.

What can you do about it? You can come to the next meeting, or write a letter to the St. Johns River Water Management District telling them of your concern.

The next meeting will be Tuesday night, July 29th, 7:00 PM., at 2210 Dogwood Circle, Mount Dora, FL

If you would like to know who to send your letters to, or get one of the form letters that have already been written please e-mail me at heidicrawford@gmail.com

Here is a link to an Orlando Sentinel article on the subject.

I was recently complaining to another Central FL Green Guide writer about the fact that I have not been able to find a natural deodorant that works for me in the summer heat.  I explained that, while I used natural deodorant during the cooler months, I had resorted to conventional products during the summer.

Heidi recommended Funk Butter, an all natural, aluminum-free deodorant from Oyin Handmade.  I hadn’t heard of this one and was eager to try it.

Wow!  This stuff works!  I ordered the unscented kind so hubby would want to use it, but now I wish I had tried the other scents after reading all the reviews.  I’m going to order more soon.  Here’s the list of ingredients for the unscented type (as listed on the package): baking soda, cornstarch, shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower oil, arrowroot, kaolin clay, calendula/chamomile powders, sweet almond oil, & good wishes.  I can’t wait to try the “Coco Mango” and “Black Cedar Fig” scents.  The reviews on the website are wonderful.

Chefs’ Night Out at Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Cafe on Tuesday evening was a fantastic culinary experience. The tables were set with white linen tablecloths and flickering votive candles cast a more romantic mood than is normally found at this hub of authentic German cuisine in downtown Sanford.

We were greeted by Christina Hollerbach, daughter of proprietors Theo and Linda Hollerbach. She could barely contain her excitement over the culinary offerings of the evening as she walked us to our elegant table. Her infectious smile and knowledge of the special menu set the tone for the event. My dining companions were pleased with her impressive ability to “speak beer!” She recommended the Hofbrau Munich to accompany the appetizer course, the Weltenburger Pils to compliment the eggplant entree, the Schneider’s USDA Organic Wiesen Edel-Weisse to match up with the mushroom eggroll entree and even had a suggestion for the dessert entree: Tucher Bajuvator.

Our appetizer course arrived soon after we did. The “Trio of Soups” was presented in three separate white, Chinese-style spoons arranged on a white dinner plate. The color contrast immediately caught my eye as I investigated the contents of each spoon. The light orange of the Curry Carrot, the bright, vibrant magenta of the Roasted Beet, and the warm off-white tone of the Potato Leek soup stood out beautifully in their serving spoons.

The Curry Carrot soup had a mild and pleasant curry flavor (think British curry powder, not Indian or Thai curry!) and a slightly sweet finish. The soup was served cold and was nicely pureed. It was garnished with two very slim slivers of carrot arranged very precisely over the soup – a nice touch!

The Roasted Beet soup had everyone at my table talking about beets of their childhood and how much they hated beets as a result – until they tasted this example! Also served cold, pureed and strained to have a very smooth texture, this soup had a wonderful flavor. Roasting the beets helped to concentrate the flavor and sweetness of this much maligned root vegetable. A dollop of creme fraiche garnished this soup beautifully.

The Potato Leek soup was prepared in the style of a fine vichyoise. This full bodied soup was perfectly smooth and had a delightfully creamy texture. Pureed and then strained, this soup was also served cold. The garnish of fried leeks on the top contrasted nicely with the smoothness of the soup. This was definitely a triumph!

Overall, the “Trio of Soups” appetizer course was a hit with my dining companions and me, and the suggested beer paired nicely with the soups. The texture, taste, and presentation made this course a success. I did find myself wistfully wishing for more soup (the Curry Carrot disappeared from my spoon way too quickly!) and would have liked to have had a temperature contrast – perhaps one hot soup and two cold?

Our entrees arrived next. The Grilled Eggplant, Cherry Olive Couscous, Candied Baby Carrots with Saffron-Orange Sauce was placed in front of me, and I quickly noted the three rounds of eggplant all had nice grill marks and were served with the aubergine rind intact. Cherry Olive Couscous was placed between each of the eggplant rounds, adding color and texture to the visual presentation as well as a nice mixture of sweet and savory flavors. The Candied Baby Carrots sat off to the side of the plate, not adding much to the overall look of the dish. The Saffron-Orange Sauce was lightly drizzled across the eggplant rounds. I was not able to discern a saffron flavor from the sauce, but the orange flavor did dance across my palate. I would have liked to have had more sauce, as eggplant can tend to be a bit dry on its own, even when cooked perfectly as mine was.

My two dining companions both had the Mushroom Eggrolls, Almond Cauliflower Puree with a Garlic Lemon Emulsion. The Almond Cauliflower Puree came in three distinctly different colors; purple, yellow, and white cauliflower. The trio of purees were centered on the plate and used to anchor the diagonally sliced Mushroom Eggrolls. The cauliflower purees were creamy and delicious. The Mushroom Eggrolls were filled with chopped mushrooms and deep fried. The crispy texture of the eggrolls contrasted nicely with the soft creaminess of the cauliflower. My dining companions both commented that they would love to see this dish as an appetizer on the regular menu.

I enjoyed both of the entrees and would definitely order them again if they were placed on the regular menu.   My dining companions enjoyed the suggested beer pairings (Weltenburger Pils and Schneider’s Wiesen Edel-Weisse), adding that the Weltenburger Pils helped balance the deep fried flavor of the eggroll wrapper.

The dessert course arrived to finish off our culinary experience. Blueberry & Ricotta Ravioli with Strawberry “Marinara” Sauce arrived to the table. Two ravioli were arranged in a white bowl and topped with what appeared to be a strawberry jam. The dish was cleverly garnished with very fine shavings of white chocolate intended to mimic a fine dusting of parmesan cheese and two perfectly shaped fresh mint leaves topped the whole dish off. The ravioli was thinly filled with ricotta cheese and chopped blueberries. The pasta itself was cooked al dente and was a bit chewy, and I would have preferred to have had more filling inside to better balance the texture of the pasta. The “Strawberry Marinara Sauce” was very sweet and overpowered the “Blueberry & Ricotta” filling, but the mint leaves did help to even the dish out. This dish was reminiscent of one of my favorite desserts I had in Germany many years ago – “spaghetti and meatballs” ice-cream!

The most disappointing part of the evening was that it had to end! Chefs Patrick, Josh, Garyn, and Chris should be commended for their culinary skill, and I sincerely thank them for bringing modern vegetarian cooking to my favorite German restaurant!

Having lived in Lake County now for the past three years, I can say one thing for sure: Livin’ the natural life here ain’t always easy.  But it is possible…if you know where to look.

The very first resource I would recommend to those looking for green options in Lake County is most definitely Velocity Magazine.

Velocity Magazine

Velocity Magazine

Velocity, formerly known as The Messenger, is filled to the brim with articles about spiritual consciousness, holistic and herbal medicine, healthy (mainly vegetarian) eats, natural family living, and much more.  There is a calendar events section so you can find out what’s going on in your area, and an astrology column written by local Central Florida astrologer, Raven Moondance.  Dotted throughout the magazine’s amazing content are beautiful ads promoting Central Florida’s green businesses.

This nautral living journal is locally produced in Mount Dora, but contains valuable information covering most of Central Florida.  It is beautiful to look at, enchanting to read, and best of all, it’s free!

For the armchair activists… a Move On petition for clean energy!

Al Gore took a big risk when he called on us to get 100% of our electricity from cheap, clean sources within 10 years.

It’s an achievable goal, but it’s already under attack from the oil and coal companies. They’re calling his plan unrealistic, impossible, and crazy.

We can turn back Big Oil’s attack if hundreds of thousands of us personally endorse Gore’s challenge to power our country with 100% cheap, clean energy within 10 years—and then we urge Obama, McCain, and Congress to get on board.

A compiled petition with your individual comment will be presented to Obama, McCain, and your Senators and Representative.

Florida School of Holistic Living is holding a rummage sale as a fundraiser. The flier went across my desk a little while ago and then I got distracted amassing things to donate both from myself personally, and then from The Alliance Continuuing Bazaar thrift shop over at First Unitarian.

My foyer looks nuts, and my car looks even wackier as I prepare to go make my second drop.

At any rate for those looking to help out with donated goods, donate some volunteer time, or looking for some fun thrifty shopping over the weekend, I invite you to check out the letter and the sale!

Hi Friends,

We are doing a Community Rummage Sale on July 19th to raise money for the co-op and the community garden…plus to help us all free up some physical space and pass along items we are no longer using.

I’m writing to you for two reasons:

1: We need the help of the community to gather items for the rummage sale to supplement what the school will already have. Clean out those closets and garages and bring your items to the school anytime from Wednesday July 16 to Friday July 18.

If you need to schedule a time to bring them outside of these days, let us know.

If it is a large item and you don’t have a way to deliver it to the school, let us know.

All donations will receive a receipt, as all donations are tax-deductible for their net value.
* P.S. – tell your friends, too! We’ve all got a few things lying around that we don’t need anymore!!

2: We need volunteers throughout Friday and Saturday to help us price, set up, and operate the rummage sale. It will be very low key, but extra hands on deck are very welcome! Friday we’ll be pricing and sorting 11 am to 7 pm. Saturday’s sale will set up around 9:30 am and will last until 4 pm (or until we’re sold out). Rain or shine – we will use the classroom if it is rainy that day.

If you can spare some of the junk taking up space in your home or office, turn it into treasure for the co-op and the community garden.
And, let us know if you can help us on July 18th or 19th!

Thanks and blessings,
Emily
