Okay, now most of you probably haven’t had your child yell this out to you… but it is one of my son’s favorite drinks! I have been juicing for about 9 years now. I started when my daughter was born. A friend of mine who just had her 5th child started talking to me about the benefits of juicing. She shared that as a nursing mom it was easier for her to get all those wonderful vitamins and minerals from fruits and veggies into her diet which then went into her breast milk. So, I decided to give it a go and have been hooked since. After researching the various juicers out there, I decided on a Champion Juicer.

The Champion Juicer is a heavy-duty machine that utilizes the mastication process, which basically means it chews up the fibers and breaks up the cell of the fruits and veggies. By masticating the produce, you end up with more fiber, vitamins, enzymes, and trace minerals.

One of the benefits of juicing for children is that they can help you do it! My children love to cut up the fruit and/or veggies and then push them through the juicer. My son will taste-test the juice and then tell me if it is ready to drink or if we need to add more produce. By helping out from the beginning, they are more inclined to drink the final product. I love knowing that they are getting such a boost of all-natural goodness with no added sugar, food dyes, and other ingredients found in bottled juices on the shelves.

Since we have been juicing for such a long time, my kids are used to me handing them lettuce juice (1 head of lettuce plus about 3 apples) at dinner and telling them to drink their salad. On hot days, we love to make carrot lemonade, which is 1 whole lemon (peeled), 1 pound of carrots, and about 3-4 apples.

My husband, although not an avid juicer, will juice apples and garlic when he feels he is getting sick. It really helps him to fight off the illness! Juicing is also an excellent way to use up produce before it goes bad. Have extra spinach… juice it with some apples! A benefit of the Champion is that it can be used for more than just juicing. Freeze some bananas, run them through the juicer and voila! You have soft serve ice cream that tastes delicious! You can get the grinder attachment and make your own nut butter or grind your own flour. It is so versatile!

So if you are looking for ways to get fresh fruits and veggies into your kids diets (and yours too!), think about giving juicing a try. You may soon be hearing “more lettuce juice, please!”

Trendy, funky, and organic are things that come to mind when I think of Hopscotch Boutique in Orlando! I just happened upon this boutique when on a drive to downtown, the hopscotch etched sidewalk lured me in.

The warm welcome is continued once inside. It offers the tiniest customers a complimentary juice bar and picnic table so Mom can shop. If you are lucky enough the owner Nikki will be there to greet you.

On to the goods, where do I begin…they carry everything from shoes, to clothing, maternity clothes, nursing covers, baby wraps, and diaper creme! They carry unique brands not found elsewhere such as Zutano, Luna Luna, Wes and Willy and many more.

So what makes them green? The fact that they carry nursing tops, slings, and Hooter Hiders is plenty! But, they also carry unique organic baby brands. You can find Earth Mama Angel Baby balms, butter, and lotions, organic swaddling blankets, clothes, and wraps.

Hopscotch Boutique can be found in Orlando’s Antique and Design District at 1620 North Orange Avenue, Orlando, FL 32802. They are closed on Sunday’s.

SFG mini-series reader Ryan reports that over at the Home Depot in Lake Mary, square foot garden enthusiasts can buy 4 cu feet bags of vermiculite from the Home Depot  for $12.99.

When setting up my kitchen garden I was unable to find it near me in large quantity so I ordered from Home Harvest instead.

There is still time to throw a bed together and get some fast growers in before the summer heat wave kicks in an all veggie gardeners take a break before the fall season ramps up in late august/early sept.

Not that there is a lack of things do to for the organic veggie gardener in summer…

While getting a harvest wasn’t part of the goals set out by the mini series of articles, I thought I’d share some pictures of our harvest. I always consider any kind of harvest as “bonus” when gardening with kids. It isn’t the point of the project, but it is fun when a batch of kids can manage to get to a crop of some kind. They are always so proud of themselves!

The church daycare kids harvested their beans and radishes and we had a good time preparing them and eating them. Back here at the home garden, we did the same only the harvest was petunia blossoms and beans.

I like to just use school safety scissors with young kids for harvesting. The scissors are less than a dollar, you can find them anywhere, the kids get practice with fine motor skills, and it helps keep them from destroying the plants by accident. Just a little snip will get the item off.

Granted, mine sometimes performs “plant haircuts” as well as “harvesting,” but it is her garden and so long as she leaves my kitchen garden “haircut free” all is good.

We got a bowl full of green beans from her little 4×4 ft square foot garden box. The beans were nice and straight, had a good mellow flavor, and were easy to tend both at home at church. All the kids said they’d want to grow those again. My family agreed with them.

So I would reccommend planting Burpee’s Bush Bean Bush Blue Lake 47 with kids in this climate. Seed Savers Empress Beans were also a nice bush bean type with good flavor, but I had more trouble keeping it bean mosaic free than the Burpee. Save that for the adult kitchen garden.

I got invited to help set up another children’s urban garden later this year for a charity group — so I’m excited to be planning another square foot adventure for a fresh batch of kids!

I hope you’ve enjoyed the mini SFG series and you are all off planting your own now. Remember, you can always check the Orange County Extension office or the Seminole County Extension office for extra plant help if you run into trouble.

Or drop me a line and I’ll do my best to help you with your SFG. Happy growing!

This weekend, Progress Energy is giving away free trees at various Central FL locations.  The types include Dalhoun Holly, Eastern Redbud, Firebush, Simon’s Stopper, and Wild Coffee.

Here’s the text from the email I received about the event:

Wind-blown trees and limbs are a leading cause of power outages. Pick up a native, low-growing tree — a better choice to plant near the lower-voltage power lines that are common in most neighborhoods — at one of these Know Where You Grow tree giveaways; limit one per household.
