I’m a new organic backyard gardener because I use it in homeschooling my daughter. As I wrap up fall harvesting, I know that I have to get my winter seeds going now so they will be of transplant size by the time I need them.

Our last Orlando frost date according to Floridata is Jan 31, 2008. Which means some of the things you may want to eat might need to go into the ground in two weeks! Did you get your seeds started in time or were you distracted with Thanksgiving like I was? What about the stuff that you can still get going in time to catch the Cold Season for growing? Do planting guide charts confuse you as much as they confuse me?

Happily, I found a great “cheat sheet” made up by local blogger Maggie Wang. You punch in your frost date and bam! You go look at what herb or veggie you want to grow and it tells you when you need to be getting your seeds started.

I’m going to be way late on parsley but I have a good chance at getting everything else started on time! Thanks, Maggie! :)

Our family has had the same fiber-optic Christmas tree since they first became popular nearly a decade ago.  My husband is happy with keeping the same old tree for frugal and, believe it or not, nostalgic reasons, but I feel it is time to experience something new, and what I have found is an eco-friendly option, this year.  Yes, “All I want for Christmas is a real Christmas tree,” in my best sing-song voice.

Our family plans to visit Santa’s Christmas Tree Forest.  Since we have not been yet, I cannot say whether they offer the potted tree option, but one of the pictures I saw on the website suggests you can choose and cut your tree or buy a live and potted one.  I like the fact that the forest is local and provides a sustainable resource option each year for families who like to have a tree during the holidays.

I did some research before deciding we would buy a live tree to learn which is more environmentally friendly…reusing an artificial tree year after year or cutting down a fresh, live evergreen.  I found it is far better to buy a cut real Christmas tree than a fake one.  Here’s a condensed pro/con list for you:

Artificial trees:

  • Non-biodegradable since they are made of plastic.  Most are made of a type of plastic called polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
  • PVC causes tons of pollution.
  • PVC is hard to recycle.
  • Lead has been found in PVC.
  • Manufacturing process requires large amounts of fossil fuels.
  • 80% are imported.

Live trees:

  • Can be potted and planted in mild areas.
  • Each acre that grows them can provide the daily oxygen requirement for 18 people. 500,000 acres in the US grow them.
  • Take on average 7 years to grow while providing birds and mammals a wider cover habitat than other crops.
  • Reduces the humidity in the nearby climate while improving the air quality allowing for less need of air conditioning unit energy output.
  • Are raised for the purpose of being harvested and often grown on land that could not support another type of agriculture which aids the soil.
  • Sustainable resource since for every tree harvested at least one more is planted.

The farm is open from November 23 until December 23.  Business hours are from 9:00am to 6:30pm.  In addition to purchasing a tree, the facility offers lots of fun family adventures including hayrides to and from the forest (free if you buy a tree, otherwise the cost is $1), cart rides, horse and pony rides, a maze in the woods ($1 for each of these), petting farm (free), a haystack (free), concessions, gift shop and bonfires for making s’mores or roasting hot dogs.  Santa is visiting the forest the first three weekends after Thanksgiving from Noon until 4:00pm.  The facility is also available for private parties after 7:00pm and for school field trips.

Jill enjoys spending her days being a helpmate to her husband and raising her three children.  She holds two bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Biology.  Some of her favorite hobbies are gardening, playing the piano and cooking.  Jill is a Juice Plus+ distributor.  Her family are the humans to Lucy, the rescued dog,  Smokey, the rescued cat and soon to be humans of a flock of chickens, too!

Did you know that we had our very own local vegan hot dog stand?  Yup, you can find the vegan hot dog guy around town with his delicious vegan hot dogs and home made vegan chili topping.  Generally you’ll find him on weekends downtown next to Lizzy McCormicks by Orange & Washington.  He also brings his hot dog stand to various local events such as vegetarian picnics, the fair trade day celebration at Dandelion, etc.

I have to admit that at first I was hesitant to taste these vegan hot dogs.  I’m a vegetarian who’s very picky about my veggie hot dogs.  In the past I’ve tasted veggie hot dogs that were pretty gross.  I only like the Morningstar brand of veggie dogs and due to my past experiences I was hesitant to try this vegan hot dog.  Well, the vegan hot dog guy (as he is known) brought over a complementary hot dog for me and let me just say it was yuuuuuummmmy!

I do hope you’ll try one for yourself.  Maybe he’ll be at the Sparkle event this Saturday at Dandelion?

This Saturday, Dec 1st Dandelion Communitea Cafe will be hosting their annual Holiday Artisan Market.  This event will feature local and eco-friendly vendors as well as live music.  It seems like a nice way for our community to get some holiday shopping done while supporting our local artisans and merchants.  Among them 10,000 Villages, Vegetarians of Central Florida, High Integrity Foods, and more.

SPARKLE is set to begin at 11am until 4pm.  Whether there to shop, browse, or simply enjoy the great music, this makes for a nice afternoon with your friends and family.  I’ll be there slingin’ my baby and supporting my friends.

In my efforts to find “cool kiddie gardening stuff”for both my daughter and the kids we play or homeschool with I came across the Kidsregen.org website. It offers a mind boggling amount of info on

  • Gardening & Farming
  • World News
  • Food & Nutrition
  • Fitnes & Health
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Games & Contests

and much more! Did you want to teach your child to do the sun salutation? What about recipes kids can make themselves?? Or water music? There’s enough there to keep us busy for quite a while and to help round out homsechool themes.

From the website:

Kidsregen.org was launched in 2001 with the goal of empowering children to make healthy choices for the environment, and for themselves. Our staff strives to make this site a safe place for children to interact with other kids, play, and have fun while learning the important connections between healthy soil/environment, healthy food, and healthy people.

Here’s the synopsis from the website of The Business of Being Born, a documentary by talk show host Ricki Lake and director Abby Epstein:

Birth: it’s a miracle. A rite of passage. A natural part of life. But more than anything, birth is a business. Compelled to find answers after a disappointing birth experience with her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to examine and question the way American women have babies. The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shocking statistics about the current maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal. Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency?

The film is being shown on Thursday, November 29th at the University of Central Florida.  The screening is free and open to the public.  Don’t miss it!
