Looking for something to do with your kids this summer that’s both eco-friendly and fun? I made pizza box solar ovens with my public school students a few years ago.  They had a blast and learned about the power of solar energy.  The activity can be modified to meet your child’s individual needs.  Younger children will need lots of help and general explanations while older children will be able to do most of the project on their own. Parents may also want to delve a bit deeper, using the experience as a springboard for learning about recycling and alternative energy sources.

I should note that many other plans can be found for solar ovens online, but this is the only one I’ve actually tested out with kids.

If you are a long drive from Whole Foods or just looking for some great deals on fresh, mostly local, organic produce, as well as organic meat, dairy, eggs, and other grocery items- give Get Green Organics a try!  I have been a member now for almost two months and I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality and ease of this food buying club.  The wide selection, competitive pricing, and outstanding customer service make it a great value.  All of the ordering and payments are done online.  You simply show up and pick up your goods.   Most of the time there is surplus, so you can buy extra if you wish.   There’s no work involved!   If something you order does not look fresh or is not what you thought it would be they will promptly refund your money.  They have also refunded money to me for produce that went bad a couple of days after purchase.   That beats the usual drive to the store for a return!

On our most recent pickup we have enjoyed super fresh organic strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cilantro, mangoes, watermelon and flame grapes.   Much of it was consumed as soon as we returned home!

There are pickup locations in Winter Park (near Whole Foods), Oviedo, and Avalon Park.  The company is looking for Independent Sales Associates to market the business as well as hosts for pickup sites.   You can find out more about the company and pickup locations from the Get Green Organics website.

Recently my kids and I went on a homeschool field trip to Our Vital
Earth
in Apopka, Florida.  It is a worm farm.  Specifically, they raise and sell composting worms… worms that eat your garbage!  These worms will eat your “green waste,” which includes cardboard, paper, kitchen waste, grass clippings, and more.  On our field trip, Grandma Bernie talked to the children about what a worm was, the difference in worms, and what wonderful things worms do for our  earth.  Each child got to take home six worms in a recycled water bottle with instructions on how to take care of them.

The end-product (or worm poop) is called vermicompost.  Vermicompost is
a nutrient-rich, natural fertilizer and soil conditioner.  Instead of spraying fertizilizer on your yard, you can use vermicompost as a natural alternative.  Vermicompost is richer in many nutrients than traditional composting.  Vermicomposting has very little odor, so you can actually keep a bin on your porch without any problem.  You can make a worm bin, or you can order bins such as Can-O-Worms.

Grandma Bernie does fieldtrips at the farm and she will also come to you.  She has on her website a listing of schools and clubs where she will be doing presentations.  My children really loved visiting this farm and every day check on their worms to make sure they are okay.  We are looking forward to building a bigger bin for them, especially once baby worms start to hatch.  We got a paper shredder so that we can start composting our paper along with our food scraps.  We get excited about when we get our vermicompost and can start applying it to our yard.

If you get the chance, go visit Grandma Bernie at Our Vital Earth with your children.  They will look at worms in a whole new, wonderful way!

I would like to wholeheartedly recommend Dr.Carr and all of the peds/NP at Peds Plus in Orlando.

They are very breastfeeding friendly, NEVER had any pressure to supplement and/or wean. Dr. Carr said the latest you should wean is kindergarten- which is pretty supportive of EBF for a ped I think! He always encourages me and congratulates me for breastfeeding and says that it is the best choice! He told me not to start solids until at least 6 months. No one has ever tried to retract my intact son… no comments about it either, treated as normal (which it is!!!) Never asked us to give vitamin drops, and there isn’t a lot of formula propaganda in the office.

I do vaccinate, but they allow you to delay or refuse vax if you sign informed consents regarding that. I know some people’s peds have fired them for that- so I figured it is a good point.

As far as “regular” ped things go- they always work you in same day if you have a sick baby- and they have Saturday hours as well. They have a sick and well side, as well as a “Nursing room” where you can keep your tiny infant away from all of the germy kids. I BF in the main office but the nursing room is nice, with recliners and water and magazines. They refer people to lactation consultants there as well.

I was at Belk tonight in the Seminole Towne Center when I spotted a whole display of organic sheets! Maybe I was just living under a rock, but I had no idea they had organic sheets available at the mall! I picked some up for my son and cheerfully explained that  they were organic. He gave me a puzzled look and asked if we could eat them! Obviously, he associates the word “organic” with yummy food!

Mary Jane's Farm

The company behind the sheets, Mary Jane’s Farm, has an extensive website with a magazine, lots of great information, and an online store that features products for every room in your home.

The Orange County Library System offers a virtual gardening experience on their website.  You can choose the type of soil you’d like, the type of seeds and then the amount of water and the site grows your garden.  It ends with a pop up with links to gardening resources.  Very cool!
