Archive for April, 2007

After having a hospital birth with my first child, I knew I wanted the birth of my second child to be different. Therefore, I switched from a large OB practice to the Birthing Cottage of Winter Park about halfway through my pregnancy. My experience was wonderful from beginning to end. The prenatal visits were great because the Cottage was so kid-friendly, with toys and movies to watch along with a friendly staff. I also found that the prenatal care was superior and more personalized than that which I had received at the OB’s office.

I was definitely happy with my birthing experience in March of 2005. Alice and Shannon attended my birth along with my doula, Kris Worischeck. Meg came in the next morning and was very helpful and positive. The experience was so different from my son’s birth. I definitely felt in control and supported during the birth of my daughter, with the staff letting nature take its course rather trying to intervene as so many OB‘s do these days. I also liked that I was free to eat and drink if I wanted to and that I wasn’t tied down by monitors and so forth. I also enjoyed wearing my own clothes, not having to fight to keep my baby with me, the home-like atmosphere, and the privacy provided at the birth center compared to the hospital experience. I decided not to have my son at the birth, so the fact I could be back home to him in a matter of hours (rather than days) was especially important to me.

See my article entitled Natural Birth Options for more information about the birth of my second child. It really was a positive experience for our family, from the prenatal care to the postpartum visits. My only complaint was that Alice was a little grumpy that night, but it is my understanding that she had delivered several babies that day and was very tired!

Have you recently had a baby at the Birthing Cottage of Winter Park? If so, please leave a comment so others can benefit from your experience.

We visited Disney on Friday for the first time in years and were delighted to find that they had bins for recycling plastic bottles and silverware along with bins for aluminum cans in all their restaurants.  With so many thousands of visitors each year, I’m sure this recycling program is really having an impact.

I also like that they sold fresh fruit in Tomorrowland!  A few years ago, I never would have been able to find apples and bananas for sale at a theme park.  They weren’t organic, but at least it was available.

Does Disney have any other “green” practices that we should know about?  Please feel free to comment.

While the whole menu certainly isn’t organic, I thought the kids’ menu was worth mentioning.

We visited Panera with my parents recently and were pleasantly surprised to see kids were given the option of organic milk or organic apple juice with their meals.  This is *wonderful* in a world of restaurants that typically offer soft drinks to toddlers!  We also noticed that the meals came with an organic squeeze yogurt by Horizon Farms which really impressed my five year old.

Unfortunately, the jelly they use on the PB+J is Smuckers, so I doubt it’s natural.  I have to admit that I didn’t ask.  Maybe I will next time…  And the bread they served the sandwiches on (turkey for my daughter and PB+J for my son) was white.  :( But hey…the fact that Panera is providing organic drink options and organic yogurt is a very good start!

Shanna Rae’s Sweets

I had the opportunity to meet Shanna Rae Horstmeyer at the Sanford Farmer’s Market a few weeks ago. :)   Her booth was called “Shanna Rae’s Sweets” and got my attention because I was in the midst of planning a birthday party for my two little ones.  Each year, it is a challenge because I needed to purchase a cake made from scratch that was free of artificial flavors, dyes, and other additives.  Finding an all natural birthday cake outside of Whole Foods was nearly impossible!

While I could make the cake myself, I wanted to eliminate the stress of baking for a large crowd since I had other things to attend to. When I asked Shanna about the ingredients she uses, she explained that, while she didn’t normally use all organic/natural ingredients, she was open to special orders and ingredient requests.

Therefore, I hired Shanna to prepare 60 cupcakes using all natural ingredients.  The cupcakes were reasonably priced (even with the adjustment for ingredients) and she even delivered them to the party for a small fee.  She was extremely helpful and always quick to return calls and emails.  The cupcakes were a hit, with the chocolate with vanilla frosting being the most popular!

Shanna Rae, a SAHM and former teacher, can be reached via phone at 321-262-1810.

5th Avenue Cafe & Market has a wonderful menu with selections that are vegetarian as well as some for those who eat meat. It has a wonderful atmosphere, but at night is not very kid friendly.  During the day, however, I have taken my daughter many times.  I prefer their dinner chef to their lunch chef, and therefore try to go later in the day.  They often have wine tastings and events with local musicians and artists. It is $15-$30 a plate in the evening, and portions are not big enough to share. However, their food is well worth the price.  Some of my favorites are the Pot Stickers and their Cashew Ginger Tofu.  They also have a juice/coffee bar, and a market to buy organic grocery items. I highly recommend driving out to Mount Dora to eat here.

Heidi wife to Richard and stay-at-home mom to Abigail. She is expecting her long awaited second child in december. Heidi does everything in life as naturally as possible, and someday hopes to own a store that carries all of the natural things she uses on an everyday basis. Heidi enjoys cooking, sewing, spending time with her family, and hopes to one day be certified in homeopathy, as an herbalist, and also as a midwife.

I was lucky enough to meet Bill Fredrickson a few weeks ago at the Sanford Farmer’s Market.  When I stopped to buy some honey, I asked if  homeschool groups could visit the apiary and was told that he actually had an observation hive that he used in schools for educational purposes.

I kept his info and contacted him later about meeting with our local Roots and Shoots group.  We were learning about honeybees that month, so I thought seeing a real life honeybee hive would be a great experience for our little ones.  There were no concerns about safety because the hive was behind glass.

Bill did an excellent job of teaching our young children (6 and under) about bees while keeping their interest.  He answered their questions and even gave them samples of honey!  They had a wonderful time and learned so much about honeybees.

Fredrickson Apiaries is based in Geneva.  Bill can be reached via phone at 407-765-1048.
